Literature Text

nobody asks
whether you have
the right to wear money
on your sleeve
on your car
to stamp dollar signs
on your eyelids or
tattoo it on your soul

nobody asks
whether or not
you asked
to be robbed

or if you liked
the taste of fear
and domination
nobody whethers
the maybe
of your wallet having
a mind and want
all its own

because that dollar
is sacred enough
that the facts
are all that matters
This is a bit of a departure for me.  Being a dad, it's something that strikes close to home.  It's about judgement and how we distribute it so selectively.  I find it ironic that in stealing money, there is always a presumed "No" in place, but when it comes to taking something much more valuable and irreplaceable, there is so much room for interpretation and judgement.  Granted the second issue is a more complicated one, but it's one with much higher stakes.

If you can't tell, this is about blaming the victim and we all know what kind of crimes the victim most often gets blamed for.  Perhaps it's some twisted societal sense that we've presumably earned the money we wear vs. our being given the bodies we wear.  We treat both as currency, but only concretely revere the first.

Comment away!  Who gets it?

Value each other, people.  Value the sanctity of humanity and the rights and dignity of the victim.

I know what you mean and. . . indeed, victim-blaming is wrong. We judge so intensely about certain crimes while just blindly accepting other ones. Though in some cases where money is involved, and stolen, the victims can remain unheard if those that steal it have more money. The oddities and unjust nature of our system even at the best of times. Nobody should judge, they should only look at the facts. Facts can't be changed from a fact with an opinion. This was a good, thought-provoking piece that definitely speaks to elements of the times.
